Hurst Reaches 500 Career Wins, Marking Legacy of Excellence at HLGU

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Hannibal-LaGrange University Head Softball Coach Dan Hurst reached a remarkable milestone this season, earning his 500th career victory as a head softball coach, combining his success at both the high school and collegiate levels.

Now in his 25th season leading the Lady Trojans softball program, Hurst has been a cornerstone of HLGU athletics since taking over the program in 2001. Over that time, he has established a culture of consistency, competitive excellence, and academic achievement.

Hurst currently holds 394 career victories at HLGU, including his 300th win milestone reached in 2018, and has guided the program to sustained success both on the field and in the classroom. Under his leadership, the Lady Trojans have produced 20 All-Conference First Team selections while consistently excelling academically. The program averages 15 Academic All-Conference honorees each year, has produced 32 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and has earned the NAIA Team Scholar Award every year since its inception.

"Reaching 500 wins is a tremendous accomplishment and speaks to Coach Hurst's longevity, consistency, and the impact he has had on generations of student-athletes," said HLGU Director of Athletics Clay Biggs. "His commitment to developing young women not only as athletes, but as people of character and faith, is what truly defines his legacy."

Hurst himself points to that impact as the most meaningful part of his career.

"Working with young people has been especially rewarding for me. I enjoy supporting their development and being someone they can learn from and trust."

In addition to his role on the field, Hurst has played a significant role across campus. He also served as HLGU's Head Women's Volleyball Coach from 2001–2006 and currently serves as an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Physical Education Department, further shaping the student experience beyond athletics.

Before arriving at HLGU, Hurst built an extensive career in education and coaching at the high school level. A native of Gary, Indiana, he graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1975, where he competed in football and baseball. He continued his academic and athletic career at Culver-Stockton College in nearby Canton, Missouri, playing both sports while earning his Bachelor of Education degree in 1979.

Hurst spent 22 years in the Palmyra Public School District (1979–2001), teaching physical education and health while coaching multiple sports. Among his many coaching roles, he served as head softball coach for seven years, compiling an outstanding 112–37 overall record and leading his team to a state championship in 1997. His tenure also included 14 years as head football coach, 22 years as junior varsity girls basketball coach, and 14 years as head boys track coach. He later earned his Master of Education degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1999.

The 500-win milestone is a testament not only to Hurst's longevity in coaching, but to the relationships, mentorship, and faith-centered leadership that have defined his career.

As the Lady Trojans continue their season, the milestone serves as a celebration of a coach whose influence reaches far beyond the scoreboard—impacting lives, building character, and shaping the future of every student-athlete who comes through the HLGU softball program.
